Cheap Heart Rate Monitor
Everybody want to be healthy, and people measure three main parameters to define them selves as healthy or not.
Body temperature, blood pressure and heart rate are the very basic things we measure to in order to stay healthy.
To measure the Heart beat rate we can simply hold ones wrist and measure but, it is not that practical.
Other way is to use a heart rate monitor, but they are quite expensive.
As hobbyist and engineers we planned to create a Heart rate monitor using Arduino.
A Heartbeat sensor is used to create this Heart rate monitor.
This project was brought to us by a Bio Medical enthusiast, and he wanted to go an extra mile with this project.
The sensor used in this project is a Hearbeat sensor which is compatible with Arduino. Heart beat sensor is available in may of the devices that we use in our day to day activities such as wrist watch, smart phone, chest strap and etc.
Heart beat sensor consist of two parts as shown in the figure below,

Heart beat sensor consist of two parts as shown in the figure below,
This sensor have two parts one is Clip to insert finger and other is Control unit.
The clip consist of IR and photo diode.
For this project we used,
- ArduinoUNO
- Heart Beat sensor
- 16*2 LCD display
- Push buttons
- 10KΩ potentiometer
- 330Ω for back light of the LCD
- Heart Beat sensor module
- Buzzer or a speaker
- Connecting wires
We have used a buzzer to emit a sound to tell the user about his health and the LCD will also display the heart beat rate and instructions for the user.
We have used push buttons to start and reset the meter.
Instructions to use the meter:
- Place the finger on the clip when it is displayed, and press start
- Keep your finger until the beep sound from the buzzer stops
- Do not shake the wire because it can cause noises in the final result.
- Once the beep sound from the buzzer is over, LCD will display your Heart Beat.
- If you want to measure again press the reset push button and you can start to measure again.
We are still developing this into a final product. We are designing a outer cover for the electronics and developing the instructions to be heard by the user clearly through the buzzer.
We are also developing this a bit further as requested by our client to try and detect any minor situations like Flem.
This project was inspired from the Electronic Hub. We are developing a bit further that project to a final product which can be used by any man.
